Anything to do with being Maori and Catholic that I can find!

Maori & Catholic banner

Father Pierre Lepetre (left) of the Society of Mary was ordained a priest at Lyons, France, in 1884, and came to New Zealand in the same year. He was first stationed at Jerusalem near Whanganui, where he learned the Māori language, and was later in charge of the Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa Māori districts. He built the Māori church at Te Ore Ore, near Masterton, and came to Wairoa as its first resident parish priest in 1894. With Lepetre is a Mr Morrell (also spelt Morel, Maurel and, in Māori, Morera), the son of  a French whaler and Erihapeti Kino. Morrell had earlier been baptised by Bishop Pompallier. This photograph was taken at Wairoa, probably around the beginning of the 20th century.

Maori & Catholic

I am inspired by our last hui of the Runanga o te Hahi Katorika ki Aotearoa (Maori Advisory Council to the NZ Catholic Bishop's Conference) to start a site dedicated tot he promotion of Maori within the Hahi and provide relevant resources and reflections in the one place as well as offer my opinion and reflection on issues that relate to us as Maori Catholic's.

intro. What is Maori Theology

The Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand. A primary step in the process of inculturation is the working out of an indigenous theology, in this case, a Maori theology. A key question in accepting an indigenous theology is the recognition that indigenous peoples have themselves been given their own Revelation.
